Lupus Nephritis

Study observes ‘considerable’ link between lupus nephritis and cardiovascular events

Posted on

A study presented at the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings observed “the persistent significant occurrence” of cardiovascular events (CVEs) in patients with lupus nephritis.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases through July 2023 and identified 18 articles that reported on CVE (myocardial infarction, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, angina pectoris and cerebrovascular disease) occurrence. CVE risk was analyzed based on geographical location and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) status.

A total of 69,059 patients with lupus nephritis were included in these studies, and the pooled CVE rate was 8% (95% CI, 5-13).

Patients from Asia had lower CVE rates than those in North America or Europe (2.2% vs 10% or 8.2%), and patients with ESKD were most likely to suffer CVEs.

The results emphasize “the importance of implementing optimized healthcare management plans to perform appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies, which can effectively result [in] reduction in the burden of lupus nephritis-related CVE and improve outcomes for the affected individuals,” the authors concluded.
